Advancing the fight towards ending tuberculosis in South Africa
The 55th Union World Conference on Lung Health took place in Bali, Indonesia, from November 12th to 16th. Hosted by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, which has been advancing lung health globally since 1920, the conference remains a beacon for driving better prevention and care for tuberculosis and related diseases. This year, our Junior Researcher, Lauren Brown, proudly represented SACEMA by presenting her work on estimating the impact of interventions aimed at improving linkage to care – a critical step in tackling the TB epidemic. Her analysis involved adapting an existing transmission-dynamic model of TB in South Africa, developed by a group of experts from the Desmond Tutu TB Centre and SACEMA. Beyond her presentation, Lauren had the opportunity to connect with experts from around the globe. From national-level policymakers to modellers, innovators in diagnostic tools, and specialists in treatment regimens for children and adults, the networking opportunities were as dynamic as the conference itself. Reflecting on the experience, Lauren praised the conference for its exceptional organization and shared that the toughest challenge was deciding which of the many engaging sessions to attend! Lauren extends her heartfelt thanks to the TB Modelling and Analysis Consortium (TB MAC) for funding this incredible opportunity, as well as to Dr Florian Marx and Dr Cari van Schalkwyk for their invaluable input in this work.
